Carpet Cleaning Tips

Insider secrets to keeping your carpets spotless!

Listed Below are Common Stains our Clients most frequently asked Us How To Clean:

(*Please see note at the bottom of the Page!)

Acne Medication

Note that certain products such as acid toilet bowl cleaners, acne medication, alkaline drain cleaners, chlorinated bleach, hair dyes, iodine, insecticides, mustard with turmeric, plant fertilizers, and similar stains cannot be removed from the carpet as they have permanently changed its color. In this case, it is best to seek professional assistance. Most likely, the only solution is to replace the damaged area with carpet from a closet or another suitable area.

Asphalt
  1. Remove as much of the asphalt as possible by blotting with a white paper towel or scraping with a dull knife.
  2. Apply the isopropyl rubbing alcohol to a clean white cloth, white paper towel, or cotton ball. If the spot extends deep into the pile, use a blotting motion until the spot is removed or no color is transferred to the cloth. This potent solution will ensure the spot is removed effectively. Do not allow the alcohol to penetrate into the backing, as this will destroy the latex bond. If the spot is on the surface only, rub it in one direction at a time. Never use a circular motion to remove the spot, which may destroy the texture. Stop if the spot is removed. If not, continue with the next step. Apply a small quantity of detergent solution to the spot. This is important to avoid over-wetting the carpet. To make the detergent solution, mix 1/4 teaspoon of a hand dishwashing detergent that does not contain lanolin or bleach with 1 quart of water; examples of safe detergents are Dawn® and Joy®. Use a blotting motion to work the detergent into the affected area. If the spot is being removed, continue applying detergent solution and blotting with a white paper towel until the spot is removed. Rinse with tap water using a spray bottle, blot to remove excess moisture.
  3. Spray lightly with water, do not blot this time; apply pad of paper towels and brick and allow to dry.
  4. If there is still some stain on the carpet and blotting is not removing it, then moisten the tufts in the stained area with 3% hydrogen peroxide. Let stand for on (1) hour. Blot and repeat until the carpet is stain-free. Light will cause peroxide to change back to water, so no rinsing is necessary.
  5. Apply a pad of paper towels to the damp area and weigh it down with a brick. This step is crucial to ensure the carpet dries evenly and any remaining stain does not resurface.
Blood
  1. Remove as much of the stain as possible by blotting with a white paper towel, then neutralize with an ammonia solution (1 tablespoon of clear household ammonia to 1/2 cup of water.). Saturate the spot with the ammonia solution using a spray bottle. Do not wet backing. Blot with a white paper towel to remove excess moisture. All solutions for removing blood must be cool.
  2. Apply a small quantity of detergent solution to the spot. (To make the detergent solution, mix 1/4 teaspoon of a hand dishwashing detergent that does not contain lanolin or bleach with 1 quart of water; examples of safe detergents are Dawn® and Joy®.) Use a blotting motion to work the detergent into the affected area. If the spot is being removed, continue applying detergent and blotting with a white paper towel until the spot is removed.
  3. Rinse with tap water using a spray bottle and blot to remove excess moisture.
  4. Spray lightly with water, do not blot this time; apply pad of paper towels and brick and allow to dry.
  5. Apply a pad of paper towels and weigh down with brick.
Candle Wax
  1. Spread brown paper (such as a grocery bag) or a terry cloth towel over the area and iron with the setting on warm.” The wax will be absorbed into the paper or towel.
  2. Remove any traces with alcohol or dry cleaning fluid.
Catsup (or Ketchup)
  1. Remove as much of the stain as possible by blotting with a white paper towel or scraping with a dull knife, then neutralize with an ammonia solution (1 tablespoon of clear household ammonia to 1/2 cup of water)—Saturate the spot with the ammonia solution using spray bottle. Do not wet backing. Blot with a white paper towel to remove excess moisture.
  2. Apply a small quantity of detergent solution to the spot. (To make the detergent solution mix 1/4 teaspoon of a hand dish washing detergent which does not contain lanolin or bleach with 1 quart of water; examples of safe detergents are Dawn® and Joy®.) Use a blotting motion to work the detergent into the affected area. If the spot is being removed, continue applying detergent and blotting with a white paper towel until the spot is removed.
  3. Rinse with tap water using a spray bottle and blot to remove excess moisture.
  4. Spray lightly with water; do not blot this time; apply a pad of paper towels and brick and allow to dry.
  5. If there is still some stain on the carpet and blotting is not removing it, then moisten the tufts in the stained area with 3% hydrogen peroxide. Let stand for on (1) hour. Blot and repeat until carpet is stain free. Light will cause peroxide to change back to water, so no rinsing is necessary. Apply a pad of paper towels and weigh down with brick.
Chewing Gum
  1. Freeze the gum using an ice cube.
  2. Shatter the frozen gum with a knife handle and vacuum. Some citrus-based products such as De-Solv-It® or Orange-Sol® have been demonstrated to break down the stickiness of gum so that it can be removed.
Children’s Drink Mix
  1. Blot up as much of the spill as is possible. A wet vacuum is useful if a large quantity of liquid was spilled.
  2. If the spot has dried, saturate the tufts in the affected area with tap water (do not over-wet). Allow to remain for about 1 minute and blot. If the spot is being removed using water, continue until the spot is completely removed. Blot dry and apply the paper towels and brick. If the stain is not completely removed, continue.
  3. If spot is being removed continue applying detergent and blotting with a white paper towel until spot is removed.
  4. Rinse with tap water using a spray bottle and blot to remove excess moisture.
  5. Spray lightly with water; do not blot this time; apply a pad of paper towels and brick and allow to dry.
  6. If there is still some stain on the carpet and blotting is not removing it, then moisten the tufts in the stained area with 3% hydrogen peroxide. Let stand for on (1) hour. Blot and repeat until carpet is stain free. Light will cause peroxide to change back to water so no rinsing is necessary. Apply a pad of paper towels and weigh down with brick.
Chlorine Bleach

Acid toilet bowl cleaners, acne medication, alkaline drain cleaners, chlorinated bleach, hair dyes, iodine, insecticides, mustard with turmeric, plant fertilizers and stains of this nature cannot be removed as they have permanently altered the carpet’s color. Call a professional. Most likely the only solution is to insert carpet from a closet, or some other area into the area where the spot is cut out.

Chocolate
  1. Remove as much of the stain as possible by blotting with white paper towel or scraping with a dull knife, then neutralize with an ammonia solution (1 tablespoon of clear household ammonia to 1/2 cup of water). Saturate spot with ammonia solution using spray bottle. Do not wet backing. Blot with a white paper towel to remove excess moisture. All solutions for removing chocolate must be cool.
  2. Blot the spill with a white paper towel or scrape it with a dull knife to remove as much of it as possible.

Call a professional. Most likely the only solution is to insert carpet from a closet, or some other area into the area where the spot is cut out.

Nail Polish
  1. Remove as much of the nail polish as possible using a spoon or dull knife.
  2. Apply a non-oily nail polish remover to a clean white cloth and gently rub (in only one direction at a time) or blot the spot. Continue until spot is removed. Do not allow nail polish remover to get to the latex backing. Go to the next step to remove nail polish remover.
  3. Apply a small quantity of detergent solution to the spot. Rust
  1. Saturate spot with lemon juice, using a spray bottle, and allow to remain for 5 minutes.

Soot
  1. Vacuum, using the crevice tool of a vacuum cleaner to remove the soot. If all or most of the soot has not been removed, call a professional cleaner. If vacuuming has removed all particles go to the next step
  2. Blot with a white paper towel or scrape with a dull knife to remove as much of the foreign material as possible.
  3. Apply isopropyl rubbing alcohol to a clean white cloth, white paper towel or cotton ball. Great cleaning job and even made me aware of some mouse droppings that they cleaned up and then disinfected within my couch. They even brought to my attention what appears to be a burn mark on one of the cushions that they tried to get out but just couldn't. No fault of their own of course. I got a large area rug and a standard sofa done and I would recommend them to anyone.

Bluegrass Company is A #1 +++ in our opinion and neither my husband nor I are relatives, or personal friends. This is the second time that we have had them - this time, because we reupholstered furniture and wanted it protected the right way! In addition to protecting the new upholstery, Kevin shared with us the specifics of how to handle any spills that may occur, AND they are now doing the same excellent job on hardwood floors. Kevin told us which products we should NOT use on our wood floors along with the 'why', and agreed that our floors are not in need (yet) of any attention beyond the usual. Sorry to be so wordy but I never get anything out of 'one word' ratings- I always want the reasoning behind the rating- and now you have it!

Bluegrass Cleaning Company was very responsive and punctual with their services. They are very accommodating to their clients schedules. Bluegrass Cleaning Company came to my house on a weekend to provide their free estimate. They explained the process of their carpet cleaning and how best to accommodate when the cleaning was done (turning down the temperature of the home, vacuuming the carpet the next day). Texts were sent out when Bluegrass Cleaning Company was on their way for the service. My husband and I really felt the difference in our carpets!
